Northgate Festival – Mayfest 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The now famous annual event of the Northgate Festivals – Mayfest Bank Holiday Music Festival takes place this bank holiday weekend at one of the epicentres of local music, Alexander’s in Chester. With stalls, facepainting, sumptuous food & drink, and of course excellent music. Beverages will flow, burgers will be barbecued and bands will bring us a barrage of amazing music. Fingers crossed for the typical British bank holiday weather (sun of course).
The free festival will take place on 2 stages, the Abbey Green main stage and the Rufus Court Acoustic Stage.
As always the festival is merely the host for the cream of Chester’s vibrant music scene – the best showcase for the enormous range of musical talent that Chester has to offer.
The Northgate Festivals – Mayfest Music Festival will take place on Sunday, May 24th kicking off at noon with the acoustic stage, with the action on the main stage starting at 2pm.
This year’s line-up includes an eclectic mixture of styles from the energetic Neon Madmen to the chilled out vibes of Alx Green through rock, indie and covers bands, including Ego King.
On the Main Stage
Ma Polaine’s Great Decline
Taking inspiration from the 1940’s jazz of Billie, the blues grit of the Wolf, and the genre sidestepping of Waits, Ma Polaine’s Great Decline create their own style of broken-down roots music; from painfully sparse bitter-sweet love songs, to fearsome tales of revenge, alongside country-soul ballads and infectious vaudevillian tango.
After Dark Fonksters
After Dark Fonksters are a hammond organ trio with the emphasise of writing tunes that have a strong melodic and harmonic sensibility with trashy pocket. The band consists of Alex Albrow – Guitar, Simon Allen – Hammond B3 and Ryan Lerigo -Jones – Drums. The trio have influences from artists such as; Steely Dan, Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Prince, Snarky Puppy, Michael Jackson, Reuben Wilson, Wayne Krantz amongst many others. With an album due early 2015 the band are currently trying to hit as many gigs as possible to play in the material for it’s launch. In essence the After Dark Fonksters are a live band on the edge with nothing to hide behind.
The Neon Madmen have been playing their lyric-driven alternative indie since 2011. All three members are involved in songwriting; ignoring genre and a shared surreal take on life makes for a highly individual sound.
Though Alx has been playing in bands for many years, it was only relatively recently he started to indulge his love for acoustic based music, and we’re very glad he did. The 24 year old self-taught musician grew up heavily influenced by his musical parents and began playing guitar at a very young age. His latest EP ‘It won’t last’ was recently released just before a week long tour of London playing a different venue every night to share his music with new audiences, the final night being at the Natural History Museum! Marrying skilful songwriting with delicate arrangement and performance, but with a vocal capable of travelling from soft and intimate, to huge soaring dynamics, his music is evocative of classic acoustic songwriting, but with a new, fresh voice”
Ian Clayton Band
Midnight Daisies are an all female, three-piece band that have played together for over six years. Their set introduces seven instruments in total: guitar, ukulele, keyboard, saxophone, drums, cajon, and bass guitar; adding real diversity to their performance.
Their music is lively, and in no time at all you will be tapping your feet and singing along with many well known classics.
Coming straight outta Chester, via too many vias to get into, the daymons got it together in late 2012, though their collective history goes back many more years… Jim, Tim, Guy… Through shared houses in lesser parts of London Town, call-centre drudgery and pre-dawn raves in abandoned cinemas… Through Britpop nearly weres, hard rock players, electronica, dub-step before anyone had called it that, and the world’s first ‘Roses tribute, these fellas have been around the block and beyond, landing back in the old town; same place, same time.
Young 3 piece band with their own unique original sound, recently featured on BBC Introducing. Currently gigging around Cheshire and recording new music.
Joe Symes & the Loving Kind
Joe Symes and the Loving Kind are an original four piece acoustic rock outfit from Liverpool UK. The group has spent the last year launching their explosive assault on UK clubs and festivals.
Not every band gets the privilege to play at NOEL GALLAGHER and The High Flying Birds Official After Show Party but JOE SYMES & THE LOVING KIND did and when you hear them you’ll know why!
JS&TLK have also been invited to be the support act for STEVE CRADOCK (Paul Weller / Ocean Colour Scene) at the 02 Academy, Liverpool and also THE BLOCKHEADS at the iconic Erics in Liverpool. At the Scala, London they shared the stage with BLOC PARTY, ALT J and XFM.
JS&TLK’s brilliant debut album came to the attention of the legendary ALAN McGEE who immediately booked them onto his 359 Records night at District, Liverpool.
The Sonic Revolvers
The Sonic Revolvers are a four piece rock band from Cheshire UK. They consist of Darrell Tinsley(vocals) Richey Jones(guitar) Mike Jones(drums) & Anthony Young (bass). The band started out as the brainchild of guitarist and songwriter Richey Jones and formed together as band in late 2010. Phil Mealing was the bass player from 2010 – 2014. The band’s sound is of an alternative rock laced with melody and emotion, being described by Louder than War as ‘…British Heavy Rock of the Twenty Tens, precise basslines, crunchy guitar riffs, clear and clean drums and riffs aplenty with a clear and throaty vocal.’
Music from the past 30 years from artists such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles and The Who to more contemporary artists including Basement Jaxx, Muse and the Arctic Monkeys will be served up at the Rufus Court venue.
Not just a covers band, Ego King perform their original material too to get you on your feet.

Chester & the Pole Cat
Chester and the Polecat are a world-class guitar and lap slide duo based in the Dee Delta of North East Wales and Cheshire. They approach the blues as a living, evolving music in the spirit of modern greats such as Alvin Youngblood Hart and Otis Taylor. Their influences range from Blind Willie Johnson and Son House through Hank and Hendrix to Ry Cooder and Wilko Johnson (no relation). They play driving gritty blues and haunting gospel blues with equal conviction. They have a huge repertoire and can keep going all night, apparently. They have performed in support of acknowledged masters of the slide guitar, such as Tom Doughty and Martin Harley.
I’m 17 year old singer/songwriter from North Wales hoping to build a strong fan base with the music he produces.
Fran & Fred
Fred has a vast array of experience as a guitarist with 20 years of playing to his credit and enjoys the challenges of trying new material. Fran has sang for years, originally with her brother, as part of a professional 5 piece group and also with an amateur operatic society! We enjoy the ‘bare bones’ approach to playing with exposed voice and guitar or ukulele.
John R Chatterton
a self taught musician with many years experience in various groups/bands as lead/rhythm guitarist, John worked in social services with people with learning disabilities; part of the time, before moving into management, developing means by way of establishing and presenting music workshops for enabling them to actively participate in music making, instrumental improvisation and, for some, stage craft and record production
